Hydroelectric power plant on the river Danube in Gabčíkovo, Slovakia

The first earth moving machinery appeared in Gabčíkovo in 1977 and it was not until 1996 that the project was brought to fruition. I had started visiting the building site in 1991 while the basin was not flooded yet and returned several times in the following years. The adjacent marsh forests along the Danube river are unique in Europe and are purportedly endangered by the dam, even though some environmentalists predict effects to the contrary and expect a resurrection of the vegetation.
